ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Mazloum Abdi in Erbil on Tuesday to discuss the latest developments in Syria and the condition of Kurds in the country.
According to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the two sides discussed “the situation in Syria and the status of the Kurds and other components in the country,” alongside broader regional developments, stability, and “confronting the threats of terrorism.”
The presidency said the meeting stressed “the necessity of dialogue and understanding among Kurdish parties in Syria to resolve issues with Damascus.”
Abdi “expressed his thanks and appreciation for the continuous support of President Nechirvan Barzani and the leadership of the Kurdistan Region for the rights of Kurds and components in Syria,” the statement added.
The meeting comes a day after Kurdish parties in Rojava criticized the outcome and voting mechanism of Syria’s interim parliamentary elections that was held on Sunday in the Kurdish-majority areas in the country, in which Kurdish candidates secured only eight of the seats despite expectations of higher representation.
The vote, held Sunday in Kurdish-majority areas across northeast Syria, marked the first parliamentary elections in territories controlled by Kurdish forces in nearly 15 years following the fall of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.
